Capitan Aviator (R) Constantin Bāzu [Buzz] Cantacuzino was Romanias highest scoring ace with 56 confirmed and 13 probable victories. Born on the 11th of November 1905 into a Romanian noble family (he was routinely referred to as a prince) he was an accomplished aerobatic pilot and an active sportsman.
In 1941 he became chief pilot of LARES airlines. The same year he joined the frontline flying Hurricanes with the 53rd Fighter Squadron. He later flew with the 7th Fighter Group and in August 1944 he became the commander of the 9th Fighter Group.
Most of his victories were gained against Soviet aircraft both on the Eastern Front and on the Home Defence Front but he also scored victories against American aircraft on the Home Defence Front and against Luftwaffe aircraft after the 23rd of August 1944. After the war he returned to his former job with LARES and in 1947, dissatisfied with the Soviet influence in postwar Romania, he fled to Italy. He settled in Spain where he continued to perform aerobatic displays. He died on the 26th of May 1958 and is buried in Madrid.
