Căpitan Aviator Alexandru Șerbănescu 
Căpitan Aviator Alexandru Șerbănescu was born on 17 May 1912 in Colonesti, County Olt, Romania. He attended the Târgovişte Military High School and graduated from the Sibiu Infantry Officers’ School in 1933. Soon after, he was appointed Comandant of the 3rd Mountain Rangers Battalion based in Braşov. In 1939 he joined the Aerial Observers School. In 1940, he joined the Air Force Officers’ School and was issued with his combat pilot’s qualification on 31 October.  In August 1942, with the rank of Locotenent Aviator, he joined the 7th Fighter Group as a fighter pilot and fought on the Stalingrad front where he was placed in temporary command of the unit. On 6 March 1943, Şerbănescu was promoted to Căpitan and on 29 March he was appointed Comandant of the 57th Fighter Squadron. On 23 October 1943 the 9th Fighter Group replaced the 7th Group, but Serbanescu remained on duty and on 13 February 1944 he was appointed Comandant of 9th Fighter Group renamed “Dessloch - Serbănescu”.
He was shot down on 18 August 1944 in a battle against American fighter aircraft. At the time of his death, he was the highest scoring ace of Aeronautica Regală Română with a tally of 47 confirmed and 8 probable victories (a tally that was later superceded by Căpitan Aviator Constantin Cantacuzino).

This figure is insipred by a photograph of Căpitan Aviator Alexandru Șerbănescu taken in 1943 when he was awarded the Mihai Viteazul order, the highest military honour bestowed by Romania. More information here: http://www.worldwar2.ro/arr/?article=734
